MEET THE CAST

ABOUT

False Pretenses tells the story of a group of eight close-knit friends who have to find out who amongst them is a trader and a murderer. Based in northern Philadelphia in the modern-day, the film ' s premise follows the protagonist Makai. To help his inner circle achieve financial freedom, he organizes a makeshift sou sou group for all friends to collaborate in for the following year. The film takes place in a cabin, where the friends, after their year-long journey of collection, decide who the winner will be of the first draw. It doesn't take long before emotions start to rise, and when the winner's announcement doesn't appease the general group, an uncalled murder takes place amongst the group. False Pretenses is a movie that, above being a family-friendly whodunit, appeals to and speaks to the current circumstances of many black families while also shedding light on systemic injustices and other structures that disproportionately affect the black community.
